Edward de Bono

About Edward de Bono

de BonoEdward de Bono was born in Malta in 1933. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, gaining an honours degree in psychology and physiology and then a D.Phil in medicine. He also holds a Ph.D from Cambridge and an MD from the University of Malta.

Dr Edward de Bono is one of the very few people in history who can be said to have had a major impact on the way we think. The term 'lateral thinking' was introduced by him and is now so much part of the language.

In the University of Buenos Aires faculties use his books as required reading. In Venezuela, by law, all school children must spend an hour a week on his programmes. In the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and the UK there are thousands of schools using Dr de Bono's programmes for the teaching of thinking.

de BonoDe Bono is the undisputed world leader in what may be the most important field of all in the future: constructive and creative thinking.

Traditional thinking is to do with analysis, judgment and argument. In a stable world this was sufficient because it was enough to identify standard situations and to apply standard solutions. This is no longer so in a changing world where the standard solutions may not work.

For many millions of people world-wide, Edward de Bono's name has become a symbol of creativity and new thinking.

Lateral Thinking for Management

Creativity is so essential a part of management equipment that it can no longer be left to chance or to the gifted amateur.

De Bono uses creativity and lateral thinking together to develop new products and ideas and generate new approaches to problem solving, organization and future alternatives in planning.

By removing the mystique of creativity and learning to treat it as a definite process which can be learned, practised and used with the aid of specific techniques, he demonstrates how traditional education and management methods which focus on logic and sequence, can be brought together to achieve astonishing results.

With today's rapid changes, judgement is not enough; we need to design forward from parallel possibilities. Two thousand five hundred years ago the Greek 'gang of three' (Socrates, Plato and Aristotle) endowed Western civilization with a thinking system based on analysis, judgement and argument. While it has its place this system lacks the construction, creative and design energies that are needed for modern life.

Those problems that can be solved by analysis have been solved, now the rest can only be solved by design:

  • accept possibilities without judging and lay them down in parallel.
  • accept both sides of a contradiction and lay them down in parallel
  • then design forwards from parallel possibilities.

Edward de Bono's Parallel Thinking is not about philosophy, but about the practical operation of thinking for both personal and professional life.
