History of the Jigsaw Puzzle

spilsburyfirst1766 Jigsaw puzzles are said to have been invented in 1760 by John Spilsbury, a mapmaker and engraver. He glued a map of the world onto a sheet of wood and sawed around each country to make pieces which fitted together. He did this as a teaching aid to help children learn geography. This use of puzzles as an educational tool continued to be the main use of jigsaw puzzles until the 1850's. Luckily we now have puzzles to do which are for pleasure not study! But don't consider that puzzling is just a frivolous pastime. Studies have shown that doing jigsaw puzzles can be beneficial to your mental health. The Alzheimer's Society of Canada did a study in 2011 which found that doing puzzles could ward off the development of dementia. Parents of autistic children have also found that doing certain types of jigsaw puzzle has given their children hours of pleasure and possible positive therapy.

So why do we like doing jigsaw puzzles? Everyone likes a challenge and 'solving' a puzzle is a logical extension of our natural curiosity and need to bring order to our environment. People do jigsaws for many different reasons. Some like the chase - being able to finish a puzzle in the shortest possible time, others like the challenge of difficult puzzles which seem at the outset to be impossible tasks, others like the journey of putting together a puzzle one piece at a time and watching a scene or picture grow before their eyes. Which one are you? Let us know via our contact page why you do puzzles and share your experiences of puzzling.

Different types of jigsaw

There are many different types of jigsaw, from pictures of famous works of art to the seemingly impossible puzzles such as a picture of a plate full of baked beans! But each to his own. That's the fun of jigsaw puzzling. We are a very varied bunch of people and what is seen as a perfect puzzle by one would be considered a waste of time by another!

cj-books-etc tries to cater for all tastes and we carry a range of different puzzles including works by famous artists, special interests, Wasgijs, Photomosaics, Murder Mystery puzzles etc. We stock jigsaws made by many of the best jigsaw producers around the world, including UK, Europe and the US.

If you are unable to find a particular puzzle you are looking for, contact us with details and we will endeavour to help you.
